U.S. Army conducting training exercises in the UP

MARQUETTE, MI— The U.S. Army is conducting essential military training in and around Marquette County and the Keweenaw Peninsula this week.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office says the training will consist of air mobility operations and ground-based, close-quarter battle training. Local terrain provides unique training opportunities and simulates environments troops may encounter when deployed.

Officials say the training is not in response to any real-world events. Robust safety precautions are in place to protect participants and residents, along with significant considerations to minimize impact to the community and noises in and around controlled areas of training during the evening and early morning hours.

The training was coordinated and approved with the appropriate local officials. It’s scheduled through August 17.
