Ice climber falls into Lake Superior at Pictured Rocks

MUNISING, MI— A rescue operation has been launched in Alger County, after an ice climber went missing by Miner’s Castle at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

The person fell into Lake Superior Tuesday just after 5 p.m.

Multiple agencies responded, including a boat from the Marquette Coast Guard and a helicopter from Air Station Traverse City. High waves and ice hindered search efforts, which will continue Wednesday morning.

Miner’s Castle is about five miles east of Munising on H-58. The National Park Service says it’s the only cliff area of the park accessible by car.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
