Law enforcement finds missing child in Gogebic County

BESSEMER, MI— A missing child has been found in the Bessemer area.

The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office was notified Wednesday around 11 a.m. that a 9-year-old child was missing from their home in the city.

The child is a participant in the Project Lifesaver program, but had removed the transmitter. It was found 13 minutes after deputies were dispatched.

The transmitter provided officers a starting point, which led them to a wooded area south of Bessemer. Gogebic County Search and Rescue and the Lac View Desert K-9 unit began a search near Steiger’s Lumber. Search and Rescue also deployed a drone.

The child was found a short time later. They received medical attention and were reunited with their parents.

Michigan State Police from the Wakefield Post, Beacon Ambulance, and Negaunee Regional Dispatch assisted in the incident.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
