Missing boy found safe in Porkies

Hurley School District

ONTONAGON COUNTY, MI— An 8-year-old boy missing in Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park for more than 48-hours has been found alive.

Nante Niemi of Hurley, Wisconsin was camping with family when he was reported missing Saturday around 1 p.m. More than 150 search and rescue personnel from the Michigan State Police and various local agencies, nine K-9s, and volunteers scoured a roughly 40-square-mile area by foot, air, and water.

Police say Nante was found safe around 1:30 p.m. Central Monday about two miles from his family’s campsite. He had braved the elements by taking shelter under a log.

Officials say he is in good health and is with his family.

The Michigan State Police thanks all the volunteers and support services that assisted in finding Nante.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
