Kayaker who died in Delta County identified

DELTA COUNTY, MI— The Delta County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the man who drowned in Little Bay de Noc while kayaking over the weekend.

Deputies say Tyler Wright, 29, of Grand Rapids had been kayaking and fishing off of Stonington on Sunday. He was reported missing that night when he failed to return to shore.

Law enforcement launched a land and water search. Wright’s kayak was found in the bay early Monday morning. His body was discovered Tuesday afternoon in about 14 feet of water, half a mile offshore.

Wright was not wearing a life jacket. The temperature of the water was around 50 degrees.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
