NEWBERRY, MI— Authorities are searching for a 14-year-old swimmer who went missing in Lake Superior Wednesday.

The Luce County Sheriff’s Office says the suspected victim was swimming with a 15-year-old near Lake Superior State Campground when undertow dragged them into deeper water. The 15-year-old made it to shallow water, but the 14-year-old was taken further from shore.

Four- to five-foot waves and north winds were reported at the time.

The Sheriff’s Office, along with the U.S. Coast Guard and DNR conservation officers, searched by boat and helicopter until dark. The Michigan State Police Dive and Drone Team joined the search on Thursday.

No additional details are available at this time.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
