Body found in Alger County is missing kayaker, MSP says

ALGER COUNTY, MI— Officials say a body that washed ashore at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on November 8 is that of a missing kayaker.

Through DNA analysis, Michigan State Police were able to identify the body as that of John Kueber, 65. Kueber was last heard from on September 22. He had gone kayaking on Lake Superior.

Search efforts for Kueber involved personnel from MSP Negaunee Post, MSP Aviation, MSP Canines, MSP Marine Services Team, Alger County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol, and the National Park Service. Despite extensive search efforts, Kueber was not found.

“This is not the outcome any of us were hoping for. We offer our condolences to the family, friends, and all those who knew Mr. Kueber. We also thank all those who assisted in the search efforts.” said Lt. Ben Eckola.

Kueber’s family has been notified and they are requesting privacy. Anyone with further information is asked to please contact the MSP Negaunee Post at 906-475-9922.
