Body of missing Marinette woman found in Menominee

MARINETTE, WI— The body of a missing Marinette woman has been found in woods just north of Menominee.

In a press conference Thursday, Marinette City Police said Gabriella Cartagena, 24, was found Tuesday morning. She was last seen on February 4 around 5 p.m. Officers believe she was with her boyfriend, Robert Chilcote, 29, in the area of Red Arrow Park. During a phone call with her family, Cartagena was heard saying, “Please don’t shoot me.” When officers arrived at the park, they found evidence pointing to a crime scene.

Investigators located Chilcote through tracking his car and data from cell towers. On February 5, he was arrested in Wright County, Minnesota for fleeing a police officer.

February 5-9, police continued to investigate and search the region. Cartagena’s body was found Tuesday around 10 a.m. in a wooded area near Birch Creek Road in Menominee County.

An autopsy was conducted Thursday. Marinette County District Attorney DeShea Morrow says once the cause of death is determined, possible charges against Chilcote can be reviewed.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
