Weeklong search conducted for Starla Goings in Alger County

ALGER COUNTY, MI— The Alger County Sheriff’s Office and a number of local, state, and federal agencies conducted a weeklong search for a missing Munising-area woman.

Starla Goings was last seen in August of 2025. Her car was found two days later near the intersection of 16 Mile Lake Road and M-94.

The Sheriff’s Office says the large-scale search began August 20 and concluded August 27. Officials covered the 16 Mile Lake area and surrounding areas.

Participating agencies included:

  • FBI—including the FBI Underwater Search and Evidence Recovery Team, Evidence Response Team, Aviation Support, and Canine Teams
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection
  • Cook County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit
  • Detroit Police Department Missing Persons Unit
  • Michigan State Police
  • Michigan Department of Natural Resources Conservation officers
  • U.S. Forest Service.

The Alger County Sheriff’s Office says significant effort was put forth in the search and all agencies will continue to investigate.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
