Missing 70-year-old hiker found alive on Isle Royale

ISLE ROYALE NATIONAL PARK, MI— A hiker who went missing on Isle Royale National Park has been found safe.

The National Park Service says that Craig Berg, 70, of Royal Oak was discovered by a group of backpackers who had been kayaking on Saturday. Authorities from multiple law enforcement and rescue agencies had been searching for Berg for a week.

His son Evan says Berg got lost while on a hike and dropped his phone and wallet in a marsh. He had been looking for other people for days when he was found by the backpackers, with help from Michigan State Police and K9 units. Berg was hypothermic and injured.

A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City airlifted Berg from the park. He was taken to Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport, then transported to UPHS-Marquette for treatment.

Evan picked his dad up over the weekend and brought him home.
