MARQUETTE COUNTY, MI— Two downstate women who went missing while hiking the North Country Trail Monday have been found safe.
The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office says two 65-year-old women from the Flint area were dropped off at the trail in Champion Township around 10 a.m. Monday. They intended to walk a 20-mile section from the Mulligan Plains to the McCormick Wilderness tract and be picked up at 7 p.m. on County Road 607 in Michigamme Township. When the women didn’t arrive by 9 p.m., their driver called for help.
The Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team deployed to the North Country Trail and located the hikers shortly after 3 a.m. on Tuesday. They were in good health and were taken to their ride.
Officials say the women encountered rougher-than-expected trail conditions and rain, which slowed their progress.
