Keweenaw County fire departments get grants

KEWEENAW COUNTY, MI--   Two Upper Peninsula fire departments are getting federal funding to improve operations.

The Sherman Township Fire Department in Keweenaw County is getting more than $14,000 to recruit and retain staff. The money comes through the Department of Homeland Security’s Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response program.

And the Ahmeek Fire Department will receive $173,000 through FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants program. It will be used to purchase new vehicles for the department.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
