I-500 raceway in the Soo gets $2 million for enhancements

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— The Sault Ste. Marie Convention and Visitors Bureau has received $2 million to upgrade the International 500 raceway.

The money comes from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration grant program. It will be used construct new roads, a parking lot, a vendor building and other upgrades that will help make the raceway venue a year-round tourist destination.

The EDA grant will be matched with $513,000 in local funds. It’s expected to create or retain 50 jobs and generate $2 million in private investment, according to grantee estimates.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
