'Distressed Cities' grants go to 2 UP towns

LANSING, MI— Two U.P. towns have received money from the Michigan Department of Treasury through its Financially Distressed Cities, Villages and Townships Grant Program.

The grants fund specific projects, services, or strategies, including infrastructure and public safety enhancements, that move a city, village, or township toward financial stability.

The City of Gaastra is getting $163,000 to replace a backhoe and the Village of Laurium will receive $165,000 to replace a grader.

A total of $2.5 million is being awarded to 13 municipalities throughout Michigan.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
