Vacant Calumet buildings receive funding to turn them into residential/commercial spaces

CALUMET, MI— Two Calumet redevelopment projects will receive help from the Revitalization and Placemaking program and Michigan Community Revitalization Program.

The historical, vacant buildings at 425 and 427 5th Street will be redeveloped into seven residential apartments and three commercial spaces. The project is anticipated to list the apartments between 50- and 100-percent of Area Median Income, with one accessible apartment on the first floor.

A $1.1 million RAP grant will assist with rehabilitation of the building and bring a total anticipated capital investment of $3.6 million. The Calumet Downtown Development Authority is supporting the project through a $20,000 grant and the Houghton County Land Bank recently spent more than $120,000 on building stabilization.
