Payment resigns as head of Chippewa Tribe

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— The chair of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians has resigned.

Aaron Payment served 20 years in tribal administration: 16 years as chair, two terms as vice chair and two terms as board member.

Payment says he intends to focus now on finding solutions to persistently low high school and college graduation rates for American Indians. He says he will also continue to serve in a Presidential appointment on the National Advisory Council of Indian Education.

The Tribe’s Board of Directors accepted Payment’s resignation at its Tuesday meeting.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
