KBIC awarded grant for safer roads

L'ANSE, MI— The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community is getting more than $259,000 in federal grants to make roads safer.

The funding is awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s “Safe Streets and Roads for All” grant program. It funds regional and local road safety projects and strategies that help prevent roadway deaths and serious injuries.

The money will be used to help the tribe develop comprehensive safety action plans. Officials say it will make the roads safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers by focusing on improvements in areas with high fatalities and other safety issues.
