Water Walkers to carry water through 1842 ceded territory in the Keweenaw

COPPER HARBOR, MI— The People of the Heart Water Walkers will carry water nearly 90 miles through the Keweenaw Saturday through Monday.

The 7th annual event to honor water resources is the closing walk of the seven-year ceremony, which began in 2019.

Walkers begin Saturday with a sunrise ceremony at Astor Shipwreck Park in Copper Harbor and conclude Monday on Indigenous Peoples Day at the Sand Point Lighthouse in Baraga. A feast will follow at the KBIC Cultural Building.

Anishinaabe women from the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community will lead the ceremony, carrying a copper vessel filled with nibi, or water.

The Water Walk will be conducted through Anishinaabe ceremonial protocol with traditional understandings of the natural environment.
