MARQUETTE, MI— The Center for Native American Studies at Northern Michigan University invites everyone to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day Monday.

It’s the sixth year that campus has hosted events in honor of native populations.

Gathering at the Territory Acknowledgment Sign at 11 a.m., campus and community leaders will share remarks about the importance of Indigenous perspectives for the school and the region.

A walk through the academic mall to raise awareness of the day will begin at 11:30 a.m. and conclude at noon at the Fire Site Pavilion in the Whitman Woods. Fire keeper Cody Mayer will tend a sacred fire, with songs from the inter-tribal community drum Teal Lake Singers.

More information is available by calling 906-227-1397.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
