60 years of service for the Ranger III

HOUGHTON, MI--   Ranger III ferry service from Houghton to Isle Royale National Park completes 60 years of service this month. 

The 165-foot-long, 34-foot-wide, 648-ton vessel carries 128-passengers. It takes a nine-member crew to operate her.

The park closes for the season on Thursday. Isle Royale and all surrounding islands close to all visitors November 1 through April 15 annually. Lake Superior waters are open to boaters, and the Houghton Visitor Center is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. year round.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
