Soo locks officially opening this week

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   The Soo Locks are opening early this season, on Wednesday.

The shipping industry requested an early opening for the safety of the vessels. James Weakley is President of the Lake Carriers’ Association. He says the Coast Guard can break ice in Whitefish Bay and the St. Mary’s River prior to and after the initial lock transits. The efficiency of icebreaking for the first transits is the primary driver for the request.

The locks officially closed January 15 to undergo repairs and maintenance.

Poe lock rewatering began March 15. The MacArthur lock will remain closed until mid-April.
