Munising boat captain to be honored for lifesaving efforts

MUNISING, MI--   The U-S Coast Guard will present the Captain David P. Dobbins Award for excellence in search and rescue to a Munising captain Wednesday.

Commander of Sector Sault Ste. Marie, Captain Anthony Jones, will recognize Captain Kate Faust and her crew of the “Shipwreck Express” for saving two kayakers last year.

On September 20th the vessel was underway for a sightseeing cruise with 51 passengers when Faust saw two kayakers in distress near Grand Island. They were struggling to paddle against 32 mph winds in 3- to 4-foot seas for more than 90 minutes. Faust immediately altered course to render assistance. Using her vessel’s homemade “man overboard” recovery system, Faust rescued the two people and their kayaks in extremely difficult conditions.

The award ceremony will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m. at Shipwreck Tours in Munising.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
