ISLE ROYALE NATIONAL PARK, MI— Murder-suicide is suspected to be the cause of death for two campers on Isle Royale this month.
They were found June 8 at a remote backcountry campground. Neither the manner of death nor their names were released.
MLive reports Keweenaw County Medical Examiner Dr. Michael McAllister says the deceased are father and son, but it’s not known who died first.
The FBI continues to investigate the incident and has not released any further information.
The Dane County, Wisconsin Medical Examiner’s Office performed autopsies on the bodies. McAllister said that’s likely because of a shortage of board-certified pathologists in the U.P.
MLive says the identities of the victims are being withheld, based on claims that releasing them could jeopardize the investigation. A Lansing-area funeral home is planning to receive the remains.
Isle Royale is a national park, but it’s also under the jurisdiction of Keweenaw County.
