Newberry goes without power after transformer breaks

NEWBERRY, MI— Community members helped each other out during a power outage in the Village of Newberry over the weekend.

Saturday around 7:50 a.m. a transformer in the village substation stopped working. Officials had to order a portable power system from the Detroit area and have it brought up on three semi trailers.

Cooling and electronics charging stations were provided at the Village Council Chambers and Living Water Assembly of God Church, where those with medical needs could stay overnight.

Around 2 p.m., the village water system went back online with the help of a backup generator from Pentland Township.

The owners of Rahilly’s IGA in Newberry decided not to let their refrigerated items spoil and go to waste. All their frozen food, some dairy and some produce were given away to residents who needed it during the outage.

Power was restored to all village circuits Sunday around 12:35 p.m.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
