IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP, MI— The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a 2-year-old boy in Ironwood.

Thurs around 4:41 a.m., deputies were dispatched on a report of a deceased child in Ironwood Township. Officers immediately began assessing the child when they arrived and confirmed he had died.

Law enforcement secured the scene and closed Lake and Sunset roads while the investigation was being carried out. Additional resources were requested from the Michigan State Police, including personnel from the Marquette Forensic Lab.

Officials say the incident remains under investigation, but there is no danger to the public.

Gogebic County Sheriff Jorge Cruz said, “This is a tragic incident. Losing a young member of our community is very hard for all of us. We will continue to investigate to determine what happened and will provide further updates to the public when that information is available.”

Assisting in the incident were the Michigan State Police Wakefield Post, the Michigan State Police Traffic Crash Reconstructionist, the Ironwood Public Safety Department, Gogebic County Road Commission, the Ironwood Township Fire Department, and the Gogebic County Victim Services Unit.
