MARQUETTE, MI— The City of Marquette is one step closer to getting a summertime dog park.

The Marquette Board of Light and power has given the city permission to use 10 acres of land it owns for a new, leash-free park. The current off-leash area is at Tourist Park. It will be open through April 30.

The planned site is off County Road 550, northwest of Tourist Park. It would accommodate dogs from May through October.

The group Marquette Dog Park Friends is seeking funds and volunteers for the project, which could cost around $250,000 dollars. More information is on their Facebook page.

Officials hope to open the new dog park in summer of 2027.
