Trailer carrying canoes tips over during strong winds on Mackinac Bridge

ST. IGNACE, MI— Strong winds on the Mackinac Bridge late Saturday night tipped over a trailer carrying eight canoes.

Around 11:12 p.m., Michigan State Police from the St. Ignace Post responded to a pickup truck towing a trailer loaded with canoes. A strong gust had pushed it over onto the bridge railing in the northbound lanes.

Troopers kept the driver and his dog warm in a patrol car while a tow truck got the trailer upright. No canoes were lost.

To make sure the trailer didn’t tip again, the tow truck remained attached to the trailer until everyone was safely on the north side of the bridge.
