The Marquette Symphony Orchestra continues its 2025–26 season with an evening devoted to the music of John Williams, a program that has already resonated strongly with the community. The concert sold out well in advance, reflecting both the broad appeal of Williams’ film scores and the orchestra’s growing connection with audiences across the region.
Music Director and Conductor Octavio Más-Arocas describes the program as uniquely universal. Williams’ music spans generations, linking grandparents, parents, and children through themes from films such as Star Wars, Jaws, and Indiana Jones. While widely known as a film composer, Williams is also regarded by fellow composers and musicians as a masterful craftsman whose work stands on its own artistic merits. His decades-long career and instantly recognizable melodies have made his music part of shared cultural memory.

The enthusiastic response to this concert also points to the orchestra’s broader momentum. By pairing accessible programs with more traditional and adventurous repertoire, the Marquette Symphony Orchestra has encouraged audiences to explore a wider range of music. That trust, built over time, has helped strengthen attendance and deepen community engagement, particularly as arts organizations continue rebuilding audiences in the post-pandemic landscape.
Beyond ticket sales, Más-Arocas emphasizes the essential role of sponsors and donors. Community support (from individual contributors to local businesses) allows the orchestra to plan confidently, attract high-caliber guest artists, and consider expanded offerings, such as additional performances. Financial stability also enables long-term season planning rather than relying solely on single-concert outcomes.
Kurt Hauswirth spoke with Más-Arocas about the upcoming concert:
Looking ahead, the remainder of the season continues this balance of familiarity and discovery. A March program will feature highlights from Bizet’s Carmen, presented with acclaimed vocal soloists and emphasizing the opera’s cinematic energy. The season concludes in April with Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, paired with a performance by the winner of the orchestra’s Youth Concerto Competition, spotlighting emerging talent alongside one of the most iconic works in the symphonic repertoire.
The John Williams Greatest Hits concert takes place Saturday, January 17, at 4:00 p.m. at Kaufman Auditorium. While the performance is currently sold out, patrons are encouraged to check for last-minute availability and to consider supporting the orchestra through donations or season involvement to help sustain future programming.
