As Marquette Fringe enters its sixth year, Board President and founding member Michael Bradford is looking toward the future by embracing a little bit of mystery. The organization’s signature Midwinter Gala returns on February 21st, transforming the U.P. Children’s Museum into a whimsical masquerade designed to celebrate local creativity while funding the next season of performing arts.
The choice of the Children’s Museum is intentional, playing into the "eclectic" and "whimsical" identity that Marquette Fringe has cultivated since its inception. Bradford notes that the museum’s unique layout provides the perfect environment for guests to explore. Rather than a static event, the gala will feature hidden elements and installations throughout the space, allowing attendees to discover the history of the Fringe while anticipating what comes next.
Central to the night’s "Magic and Mystery" theme is the mask creation station. This hands-on feature reflects the organization's broader mission: encouraging individuals to explore new artistic mediums without the fear of doing something "wrong." By providing the materials and a space for self-expression, the Fringe hopes to show that anyone can be an artist.
Kurt Hauswirth spoke with Bradford about the Gala:
This philosophy of accessibility extends to the ticket booth as well. While the gala serves as a primary fundraiser for the year, Bradford emphasizes the importance of keeping admission costs low. By maintaining a low barrier to entry for the public, the Fringe can gather a diverse community whose support directly funds:
- Equipment and venue rentals for local performers
- The production of original works by area playwrights
- The removal of financial hurdles that often prevent "non-traditional" art from reaching a stage
The evening promises a "soft welcome" to the world of Fringe, offering a classy yet playful atmosphere before the organization dives into more programming throughout the year. The soundtrack for the night will be provided by two distinct jazz sets, featuring local talents Patrick Booth and Luke Arquette early in the evening, followed by Parker Belonio and Ryan Dart.
Beyond the music and cocktails, the gala serves as the official launchpad for the 2026 season. Bradford shared his excitement for the upcoming year, noting that after navigating the challenges of the last few years, the organization is finally ready to unveil a lineup of unique announcements that will be made live during the event.
