Peter White Public Library is diving into a bustling fall season filled with creative programming and community-focused initiatives. Adult Programming Coordinator Marty Achatz recently visited the studio to outline the library's autumn lineup, starting with nationwide Banned Books Week and the library's local Free to Read Week celebrations. Highlights include a community-wide banned book scavenger hunt with local bookstore gift card prizes, an interactive literary puzzle day, and an open mic reading paired with music from Brian and Molly Wallen. The schedule also features hands-on creative workshops, including a writing session led by veteran Michigan teacher and author Jeff Kass.

The library's October calendar features major guest visits that showcase both regional talent and nationally recognized literary figures. Renowned Michigan author Bonnie Jo Campbell will present her new release, "The Spirits," in the library community room on October 28. The following evening, through a continuing collaboration with the Northern Michigan University English Department's Visiting Writers Series, award-winning poet and essayist Layli Long Soldier (a recent MacArthur "Genius" Grant recipient) will deliver a public presentation.

Public Radio 90's Kurt Hauswirth spoke with Achatz about library events and partnerships:

These diverse offerings highlight the vital role civic partnerships play in expanding community outreach across the Marquette region. By collaborating with university departments, local businesses, tribal affiliations, and public media outlets, the library enriches its scope far beyond traditional book lending and specialty equipment rentals. Much like public radio, public libraries rely heavily on community support, taxpayer stewardship, and active participation to sustain vibrant local culture.
