Educator, Ishpeming councilmember passes away

ISHPEMING, MI— Longtime educator and Ishpeming City Council member Stuart ‘Stu’ Skauge has died.

The city announced the 73-year-old passed Friday. He had served three years of his second four-year term.

Skauge was a public school teacher for 33 years and a member of the Michigan Education Association. He also served as President and Chief Negotiator for his bargaining unit in the Marquette Area Public Schools for more than 25 years.

Skauge was a lifetime member and former commander of the Ishpeming VFW Post 4573.

During his time in Ishpeming, Skauge was part of the development panel for the construction and paving of Malton Road, and the construction of the Lake Bancroft Pavilion and Ishpeming Senior Center.

The city will now begin the process for filling the vacancy.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
