Lesser-known candidate to challenge Calley

LANSING, MI (AP)--   A Tea Party activist has a longshot chance to be Governor Rick Snyder's unwelcome running mate after persuading Republicans to make him a candidate.

Wes Nakagiri's challenge to Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley seemed in doubt after he missed a deadline to qualify for the summer state convention. But the automotive engineering manager recently found another way to qualify.

It's customary for activists to get behind the gubernatorial candidate's choice of running mate. Yet Nakagiri's bid can't be discounted given the unpredictability of convention politics and some conservatives' unease with the more moderate Snyder.

Nakagiri is critical of Snyder's expansion of Medicaid and embrace of the national Common Core education standards. Calley counters that as activists learn more about his conservative voice in the administration, they're supportive of him staying on.
