National politicians stumping for MI candidates

The Atlantic

ANN ARBOR, MI (MPRN)--   Big name national politicians are flowing into Michigan as Election Day draws near.

Former President Barack Obama is scheduled to campaign with Democrats in Detroit Friday. Vice President Mike Pence is doing the same for Republicans next week in Michigan.

Matt Grossman is a political scientist at Michigan State University.

He says the national figures give the local candidate a chance to better connect with voters.

“Voters are paying more attention to national media than local media. They are learning more about national issues and less about local issues,” he says.

Grossman says local candidates also benefit from the generally positive media coverage these type of political events draw.
