Chris Mapps enters race for state Senate seat

Chris Mapps

QUINNESEC, MI— A Democrat has thrown his hat into the ring for the 38th state Senate seat.

In a press release Wednesday, Quinnesec resident Chris Mapps, a veteran who served tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, said he wants to make sure the Upper Peninsula gets its fair share.

Mapps said his campaign will focus on fighting for working families, expanding rural healthcare, protecting veterans’ services, and bringing good-paying jobs back to local communities.

The longtime labor advocate said he has spent years fighting for fair wages, safe working conditions, and collective bargaining rights for U.P. workers.

“We deserve jobs that stay in our communities—not tax breaks that send them away,” Mapps said. “We deserve healthcare that doesn’t require a three-hour drive or a second mortgage. Our veterans deserve respect in action, and our kids deserve a future here at home—not an economy that forces them out.”

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
