Chippewa County snowmobile accident claims life

CHIPPEWA COUNTY, MI--   The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office says hazardous winter weather caused numerous accidents Thursday.

In Raco, a semi had slowed down for other traffic on M-28 when it was rear-ended by a pickup truck. The driver and passenger of the pickup were injured and taken to War Memorial Hospital for treatment.

At virtually the same time a snowmobile accident on Trail #8 killed a downstate man.

Officials say Kristen Brown, 49, of Portland was driving faster than conditions would allow. He had just crossed the Brimley Grade Road when he was thrown from the snowmobile and landed in the middle of the trail. Due to blinding snow a second snowmobiler was unable to see Brown and ran into him.

Brown died of his injuries. The other snowmobiler was not injured.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
