Drowning reported in Mackinac County

MACKINAC COUNTY, MI--   A 28-year-old woman has drowned in Lake Michigan in Mackinac County.

State Police from the St. Ignace Post say it happened Thursday around 4 p.m. near US-2 and the Dunes just west of Pointe Aux Chenes Road. Officials say there were

Two people in the water—the woman and a 13-year-old girl—and they were far from shore. At one point it looked like they were above the water but could barely be seen.

Troopers responded to the scene along with EMS, firefighters, the Coast Guard and the Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office. They saw the 13-year-old being helped to shore by two bystanders. She was breathing and conscious.

Troopers and a sergeant went into the surf to locate the 28-year-old but were unsuccessful. She was eventually spotted floating by a firefighter.

A Mackinac Island rescue boat brought the woman on board and officials began CPR. She was moved to a Coast Guard boat where CPR continued through the trip to Mackinac Straits Hospital. The victim could not be resuscitated.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
