Levin seeks support on lighthouse bill

By Abbey Kwiatkowski

UNDATED – Senator Carl Levin continues to encourage the National Park Subcommittee to support a bill to preserve lighthouses. The National Lighthouse Stewardship Act would create a 3 year competitive grant program with the sole purpose of preserving and rehabilitating historic lighthouses across the country. The legislation was introduced in March, and would work as a pilot program, allowing $20 million dollars to be awarded by the Department of Interior to local governments or non-profit organizations who are stewards of historic lighthouses. Currently there are 51 lighthouses, 13 in Michigan, that have been transferred to custodians who will preserve them and keep them open to the public.
