NMU faring well despite COVID, Erickson says

MARQUETTE, MI--    Northern Michigan University is holding its own when it comes to the coronavirus.

That’s according to President Fritz Erickson. In an email to campus Wednesday Erickson answered some questions posed to him from students and staff. He said there are six active cases of COVID-19 on campus, and out of 370 completed surveillance tests only two came back positive.

Northern’s next testing of randomly selected students, faculty and staff begins October 12.

Because the number of COVID cases is relatively low, the school will continue in-person instruction.

As to rumors the university is shutting down the PEIF or the Berry Events Center, Erickson says staff is addressing people not wearing masks or wearing them properly, but there are no plans to close the facilities. He notes that could change if people play sports with their masks hanging at their chins.
