Sawyer numbers up

SAWYER, MI--   More passengers used Sawyer International Airport last year than in 2012.

Officials say 83,799 passengers traveled to or through the airport in 2013.  That’s 7,798 more passengers—or a 10.26 percent increase—over 2012 numbers.

Airport Manager Duane DuRay says negotiations with American and Delta Airlines are underway.  He believes if the passenger trend continues at Sawyer the airport could offer additional service.

The report indicates more than 1.5 million pounds of cargo went through Sawyer last year.  That represents almost half the cargo in the U.P.

But officials say general aviation traffic as a whole was down in 2013 compared to 2012.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
