Stranded family rescued from Pictured Rocks beach

MUNISING, MI--   Four people had to be rescued from a Pictured Rocks beach Tuesday when their canoe took on water.

Around 9 p.m. the Alger County Sheriff’s Office received a call from Pictured Rocks Boat Cruises reporting four people near Bridal Falls about a mile east of Miners Beach. Alger County Rescue 21 responded with two boats.

Officials say two adults and two small children were canoeing along the lakeshore when they were overtaken by rising winds and waves. The canoe took on a substantial amount of water, which rendered it inoperable.

The victims, who were wearing life jackets, had to swim about 150 yards to reach a small rocky beach, where they were later seen by the passengers and captain of the cruise boat.

The victims were picked up by an Alger County Rescue boat and taken to Munising Memorial Hospital for evaluation.

Sheriff’s officials are reminding people to use extreme caution when venturing out on Lake Superior. They say being aware of weather conditions, time of day and utilization of a proper vessel is a must.
