Two students drowned in Lake Superior near Marquette

Marquette, MI – Two people drowned over the weekend in Marquette. City police say the incident occured Sunday in Lake Superior around Picnic Rocks. Marquette Police Department divers began a search for the swimmers reported missing at 2:43 p.m. Thirty minutes later they were found 150 feet from shore in 9 feet of water. They were transported to Marquette General Hospital where both were pronounced dead. The victime are identified as 18-year-old Toni Copeland of McDonough, New York and 18-year-old Cassiano Huckabee of Chicago. Copeland was a member of the US Olympic Education Center female wrestling team, and Huckabee was a student at Northern Michigan University.
