Officials trying to find new snowmobile route in Gogebic County

WAKEFIELD, MI— The Department of Natural Resources and Wakefield officials are discussing the possible reroute of a major snowmobile connector trail in Gogebic County.

Trail No. 2 is the main east-west connector across the western Upper Peninsula. About two miles of it runs through Wakefield along Old US-2, and it’s causing traffic and safety concerns.

Until last year, the section had crossed privately-owned land with permission from the owners. The current owners, who run a ski hill and resort, no longer want the trail on their property. That has led to the reroute through Wakefield, as there are no other alternatives.

DNR Parks and Recreation Division officials and city leaders met earlier this fall. They say they plan to continue working toward a solution.
