Free fishing weekend this weekend

UNDATED— The state is holding one of its two yearly free fishing weekends on Saturday and Sunday.

All fishing license fees will be waived over the two days. Residents and out-of-state visitors will get to fish both inland and Great Lakes’ waters for all species of fish.

To make things easier, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and its partners are continuing to keep certain ice-fishing locations clear. Nearly 30 popular boating access sites across ten U.P. counties will be plowed throughout the winter.

Locations to have boating access sites plowed this winter include:

  • Baraga County: Vermilac Lake, Silver River
  • Chippewa County: Munuscong Lake
  • Delta County: Little Bay de Noc (Kipling), Ford River
  • Dickinson County: Lake Louise
  • Iron County: Indian Lake, Swan Lake, Lake Mary, Lake Emily, Lake Ellen
  • Keweenaw County: Gratiot Lake, Lake Medora, Lake Bailey
  • Luce County: Little Lake Harbor, Kak’s Lake, Big Manistique Lake
  • Mackinac County: South Manistique Lake, North Manistique Lake, Milakokia Lake and Millecoquins Lake
  • Marquette County: Lake Michigamme, Greenwood Reservoir, Big Shag Lake
  • Schoolcraft County: McDonald Lake, Indian Lake
