HOUGHTON, MI— The snowmobile crossing at the Portage Lake Lift Bridge between Houghton and Hancock is now closed.
The Department of Natural Resources says that’s due to deteriorating snow conditions. Officials say recent warm weather has exposed steel deck grating that can be damaged by snowmobile carbides, making the bridge crossing unsafe.
The closure takes effect immediately and runs through March 31, when the snowmobile season officially ends in Michigan. The DNR worked with the Keweenaw Snowmobile Club to determine the closure.
