AUTRAIN, MI— Forest Lake State Forest Campground in Alger County is closing early next month.

The site about 10 miles south of AuTrain is on property the Department of Natural Resources has been leasing from a hydro power company. The company was required to provide recreation as part of its federal energy license for the operation of a dam.

The property was recently foreclosed and became bank-owned. DNR officials say the new owners do not wish to operate a campground or continue public access.

Forest Lake State Forest Campground will close effective Monday, June 9.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
