Delta County personnel rescue person after 4-wheeler goes into Lake Michigan

Delta County Sheriff's Office

ESCANABA, MI— A person was rescued from Little Bay de Noc Tuesday, after their 4-wheeler went through the ice.

The Delta County Sheriff’s Office and ice rescue personnel responded around 7:30 a.m. to the site one mile east of the Days River. Deputies used a drone to locate the person and an airboat to rescue them.

Rescue personnel observed very unsafe ice conditions on the bay. They say when temperatures drop over the next few days, the water will develop a thin layer of ice that looks safe, but isn’t. They’re reminding residents that ice conditions change on a regular basis.

The Sheriff’s Office purchased the airboat last fall with American Rescue Plan Act funding. Officials say it’s been used on several rescues already.
