Canoe overturns on Deer Lake, 4 rescued

ISHPEMING, MI— Four people were rescued from Ishpeming’s Deer Lake Wednesday, after a canoe overturned.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Unit was dispatched to the lake around 8:30 p.m. Four people were hanging onto an overturned canoe about 400 yards from shore.

Two of the people had entered the water to help their friends. They were wearing life jackets and were able to swim back to shore. The two others were safely brought onboard a Sheriff’s Office boat and the canoe was recovered from the water.

All subjects were taken to UPHS-Bell for evaluation of hypothermia.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol, Ishpeming Township Fire Department, Rescue 131, and UPHS EMS.
