Rescue personnel retrieve two from Big Bay de Noc after their snowmobiles fall through the ice

ESCANABA, MI— Two people were rescued from the ice on Big Bay de Noc Sunday.

Delta County Sheriff’s deputies and Ice Rescue personnel were dispatched around 10:30 a.m. to an area near Round Island. The island is about three miles offshore and even further from the nearest launch site.

Rescuers were able to get to the subjects through the use of the Sheriff's Office and Masonville Township’s airboats. They discovered the subjects had been on snowmobiles and both machines went through the ice, but only one of the subjects fell into the water. He was able to get out of the water on his own but was stranded on the ice. The other subject made it to Round Island to await rescue.

Both people were treated at the scene and released.

Deputies were assisted by Ensign Township, Masonville Township, Delta County Search and Rescue, Rampart EMS, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
