Ice fisherman rescued from Whitefish Bay after he gets lost in blinding snow

Chippewa County Sheriff's Office

CHIPPEWA COUNTY, MI— A missing fisherman was found on the ice of Whitefish Bay in Chippewa County early Monday morning.

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office says the man was last seen Sunday afternoon heading towards shore on his snowmobile. Blowing snow had severely decreased visibility.

A sheriff’s search and rescue team used a hovercraft and drone to search the area. Officials found the man around 2:00 a.m. Monday, stuck in heavy slush several miles from shore. He wasn’t able to find his launch location because of blowing snow.

The man was checked out by EMS personnel and released.

Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office and Department of Natural Resources snowmobiles responded to the scene, along with a U.S. Coast Guard air boat.
