Mitchell to advise USA boxing teams

Al Mitchell

MARQUETTE, MI--   A former coach with the U.S. Olympic Education Center is headed to the London Olympics. 

Al Mitchell has been named technical advisor to the 2012 USA Boxing Olympic Team.  He was the head coach in the 1996 summer Olympics in Atlanta.

Mitchell will work with both the men’s and women’s teams and is currently working with the athletes at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.  The squad leaves for England on Saturday. 

Also going to the games is Northern Michigan University and USOEC alumna Mikaela Mayer of West Hills, California, who recently won a bronze at the boxing world championships.  She’ll be a training partner for Team USA.    

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
